The Wonders Of Dental Implants
Just lost a tooth? No need to worry about the way you look whenever you smile. Dental implants can restore your tooth, a tooth which will look as natural as your real teeth such that others will have difficulty identifying the implant from the real teeth. An expert Canadian cosmetic dentist can do the wonder for you.
Dental implant is a modern dental procedure for replacing lost teeth. The dental root implant is directly fastened to the bone of the jaw. So that the concerned areas of the jaw bone will naturally grow up to the surface of the implant. Then the implant will be securedly held in place by the bone. There is no tissue or cartilage or ligament between the jaw bone and the implant. This process is called osseointegration.
After four to six months the process is complete or in other words the implant had already osseointegrated into the jaw bone. In this process the connection between the bone and the implant is manifested both structurally and functionally. Thus, the implanted tooth will behave just like a natural tooth. The dentist will now place a crown over the implant to mimic the look of a real tooth. There are also cases in which osseointegration does not occur thus, the implant was not successful. To maximize the success of osseointegration a Canadian cosmetic dentist ensures that all the necessary precautions are observed and the different steps are carefully undertaken. There are two critical steps involve in dental implant which are the preparation of the jaw and the placement of the implant.
Preparation of the jaw
The procedure of dental implant usually starts with drilling a hole on the part of the jaw where the tooth was extracted or lacking. This particular site is called edentulous jaw site and the narrow hole is called as the pilot hole. The purpose of this hole is to guide the screw that will support the dental implant so that it will stay in place. The screw is made of titanium.
Placing the implant
The narrow edentulous jaw hole is gradually enlarged to a diameter that will accommodate the screw. Then when the titanium screw is already securedly place in the hole, a protective cover screw is placed at the implanted screw. The implanted screw will be allowed to osseointegrate then heal for three months to six months. After which the protective screw will be removed then a temporary crown will be placed on top of the implant. Then a gum will be allowed to normally form around the temporary crown. The purpose then of the temporary crown is to serve as a pattern for the gum. The final step is when the temporary crown can be removed already then a permanent crown will be placed.
As you can see the dental implant procedure is quite delicate and arduous but with the skill and dedication of a cosmetic dentist, your can eventually recover your tooth and flash that winning smile again.
